One Million Tree Initiative: A greener tomorrow begins with a leap of faith

One million trees initiative and Corporate partners turns Magodo GRA housing estate Lagos street into a leisure and green park four years after tree planning campaign.
While the COVID ravaged the entire world, everything literally stopped except for the alarming news of morbidity on daily basis. Living wasn’t only put on but generally lost its appeal, the last thing on anybody’s mind was to save the earth.
While we hibernated, the thought to revive a previous environmental preservation project, Eco-Corps cropped up for my brother, Washington and I.
Crazy thought, or so it appeared to many. Do you blame them? I don’t either.
And so, One Million Tree Initiative, an NGO, designed to raise awareness on critical environmental issues such as climate change, climate justice, advocacy and most importantly to create action through planting trees was conceived.
So, we took a leap of faith…in green, towards a Greener future.
We planned and strategized, yet, nobody gave us a chance.
It was a bizarre idea to sell while the world was ebbing away. No life. No air, no nothing and you are shopping for someone to buy into your idea to plant trees. For what? To tackle the menace of climate change. Well, that wasn’t possible.
But our family provided us with a strong shoulder to lean on, supporting our vision in every way. Then, a handful of converts, “crazy ones” like Kingsley Uranta, a seasoned broadcast journalist and Head, Media Academy, Channels Television joined the lean team.
With the duo of Washington Uba, Founder/Convener and Josfyn Uba, a humanitarian journalist Co- founding the group,
close family friends like David Adesanya, veteran actor, Soibifaa Dokubo, Hon. Yemisi Alashe Bailey, Samuel Nkeze, Patrick Anadi, award winning journalist/Poet, Evelyn Osagie and a few others who believed in the vision soldiered on despite the odds.
But we didn’t give up. For us, our passion would definitely drive this idea through. We pushed on, giving it all we have. And executed the first project on June 5th, 2021 in commemoration of the World Environment Day.

Magodo GRA Housing Estate, phase 1, Lagos was chosen for our pilot project. In strict adherance of safe distance and nose masking, we planted about 100 Madagascar almond trees on the median while skanking to some good reggae music.
About four years down the line, the team can look back with pride and say, it is worth it.
Our campaign to save the environment continues. Within these years, we have carried out large scale tree planting programs in several schools and communities within Lagos and other cities in Nigeria in collaboration with Rotary International Club.
Last year, in partnership with some corporate organizations like LG Electronics, CE- Power Solutions, GSR 360 and SMP Media Group, a total of 115 trees were planted at Omole Housing Estate, phase 1, Ikeja in commemoration of the World Environment Day 2024.
One Million Tree Initiative does not engage in these tree planting activities just for the fun of it. We plant for Sustainability.
Our vision is that in the next 10 years, Nigerians would have imbibed the culture of preserving the ecosystem by planting trees in their communities and caring for them.
So, it’s always a delight for us to go back to our different project locations to assess the progress made within a particular period.
It’s so great to see all the locations taking typical shape of a green zones characterized by lush, blooming trees.
Apart from enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the estate, the trees have no doubt, improved air quality, and have supported biodiversity. They also serves as buffers against urban noise and pollution, making them tranquil spaces in an otherwise bustling community
and are providing habitats for birds.
One Million Tree Initiative as a group prides itself in these efforts for environmental conservation, advocating for a greener sustainable future for all.
It’s not yet Uhuru.
